An Unusual Antique Silver-Plated Pedestal Bowl richly embellished with repoussé scrolls, flowers, and foliate motifs. Standing on a raised circular foot with complementary floral decoration, it carries a central cartouche engraved with an armorial crest and motto ‘Floreat Etona’ – circa 1880.

“Floreat Etona” is Latin for “May Eton flourish” or “Let Eton flourish.”

It’s the motto of Eton College (the famous English boarding school founded in 1440). The phrase is used as a kind of blessing or rallying cry for the continued success and prosperity of the school.

* Perhaps it once stood in a grand dining hall or on the mantel of a proud family home. Imagine it presented as a prize or commemorative gift to an Eton scholar over a century ago.
