A Rare and Unusual Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case combining a match holder with a hinged photographic front compartment. The outer case is square with softly rounded corners and a suspension loop at the top, suitable for wearing on a chain or attaching to a chatelaine. Both exterior faces are finely engraved with scrolling foliate decoration. A plain circular cartouche to the front provides space for initials or a small personal inscription.
The main body functions as a vesta case, with a compartment intended to hold matches and a match striker one the base. The front section opens outward to reveal two oval photo frames, allowing the owner to carry a pair of small portraits inside. Hallmarked for Birmingham, 1905.
* An especially appealing piece for collectors who value unusual silver with both function and character!
