A wonderfully decorative Victorian silver plated biscuit box bearing a diamond registration mark dating to 1874, featuring an elaborate cylindrical body adorned with deeply raised classical figures in flowing drapery. The figures are arranged in a continuous scene around the box, with playful cherubs, floral garlands and finely textured backgrounds creating a particularly striking three-dimensional effect.
The box stands on a broad, stepped circular base and is finished with beaded borders above and below the figural decoration. Its hinged, domed lid is surmounted by a charming sculptural finial depicting a small standing figure resting against a draped shield, raised on a decorative foliate and scrollwork mount. The smooth, polished surfaces of the lid and base provide an attractive contrast to the richly detailed body.
What we particularly like about this piece is the remarkable depth and movement of the decoration, with the figures seeming to emerge from the surface of the silver. The sculptural finial adds another delightful detail, making this as much a decorative object as a practical biscuit box. A splendid Victorian table centrepiece, equally suited to displaying on a sideboard or cabinet.
