An elaborate Victorian silver plated centrepiece, dating to circa 1890, featuring three large, beautifully formed shells arranged around a central coral-shaped carrying handle. Each shell has a deeply fluted, sweeping surface with softly scalloped edges, creating an attractive play of light across the polished silver plate.
The three shells radiate outwards from a richly textured central formation, surrounded by smaller seashells of various shapes, including spiral and conical forms. Rising above is a distinctive branching coral handle, with an irregular, naturalistic surface that complements the marine decoration. The contrast between the smooth, flowing shells and the intricate detail of the coral and smaller shells gives the piece considerable visual interest.
There is something especially pleasing about the way the entire design follows a marine theme, right through to the coral handle. Rather than simply being decorative, the three generous shell-shaped dishes also provide practical spaces for presenting sweets, nuts or other small treats. A striking centrepiece for a dining table or sideboard, with plenty of character when viewed from any angle.
