Antique Sterling Silver Shell Butter Dishes and Spreaders Boxed Set 1918

An attractive antique sterling silver butter serving set, comprising a pair of scallop shell-shaped butter dishes and two butter spreaders, presented in a fitted case. The dishes are hallmarked for Sheffield 1918, while the spreaders are hallmarked for London 1919, all bearing the same maker's mark.

The two butter dishes are beautifully modelled as open scallop shells, with pronounced radiating flutes, gently undulating edges and smooth, polished upper sections. Their generous, shallow form makes them ideal for serving individual portions of butter. The accompanying spreaders have elegantly shaped blades with decorative curved edges, slender stems and distinctive fan-shaped terminals that complement the shell design of the dishes.

There is something particularly charming about a dedicated butter serving set such as this, reflecting a time when even the smaller details of the dining table received special attention. The four pieces are neatly arranged within a shaped black presentation case, finished with gold-coloured edging, a cream silk-lined lid and a contrasting dark velvet interior. A delightful set for entertaining, equally suited to regular use or as an attractive addition to a collection of antique table silver.
