A richly decorated sterling silver trinket box, Sheffield 1899, with a rectangular hinged form and extensive figural repoussé decoration. The lid is worked with a lively outdoor scene of musicians and dancing figures beside rustic buildings and fencing, while the surrounding surfaces are filled with scrolling ornament and detailed figural motifs.
The sides are especially decorative, featuring cherub figures amongst bold foliate scrollwork, with further engraved scrolling detail around the lid edge. One detail that particularly stands out is the amount of narrative decoration carried across the whole box, giving each side something different to discover. Small rounded feet raise the box slightly from the surface and complete the substantial form.
Opening the hinged lid reveals a gilt interior, providing a warm contrast to the silver exterior. Both decorative and practical, it would make an appealing dressing-table piece for jewellery or other small keepsakes, as well as a striking display item in a collection of late nineteenth-century silver.
