Impressive Antique Victorian Silver Plated Cut Glass Cruet Set circa 1870

An impressive Victorian silver plated cruet set dating to circa 1870, arranged on an oval engraved stand with a tall central carrying handle. The set holds seven cut glass bottles and jars of varying sizes, including examples with faceted glass stoppers and decorative silver plated covers, all supported within individual circular holders.

The silver plated framework is particularly elaborate, with pierced and engraved decoration incorporating birds, flowers and scrolling foliage. Similar pierced work continues up the substantial central handle, while the oval base is engraved with scrolling ornament and shaped cartouches, finished with a beaded border and decorative pierced feet. One detail that gives this piece considerable character is the repeated bird decoration within the openwork, which becomes especially striking when viewed against the clear cut glass.

The combination of richly worked silver plating and intricately cut glass gives the set a strong decorative presence from every angle. Originally intended for presenting a selection of table condiments, it would now make an excellent centrepiece for a dining room or sideboard, as well as an appealing addition to a collection of Victorian tableware.
