A striking pair of large antique china lidded vases dating to circa 1920, richly decorated throughout with blue transfer print scenes. The rounded bodies are subtly hexagonal in form, with very slight vertical edges giving definition to the shape while retaining a full, curved profile. Architectural landscapes with buildings, trees, distant hills, figures and a horse-drawn carriage extend around the bodies, framed by detailed foliate borders.
The hexagonal form continues through the openings and shaped lids, each surmounted by a pointed blue finial. One detail that particularly stands out is the way the softly rounded bodies contrast with the more clearly defined hexagonal necks, lids and bases, giving the pair an especially pleasing architectural quality.
Their generous scale and detailed blue and white decoration make them well suited to display together on a large mantel, console table or sideboard, where both the form and continuous scenic decoration can be appreciated.
