An elegant antique jewellery box in tortoise shell with sterling silver mounts, hallmarked London 1897. The rectangular body has softly waved edges and a hinged lid, with the rich mottled tortoise shell providing a striking backdrop to the applied silver decoration.
The lid and sides are framed with flowing silver scrollwork, shell motifs and foliate ornament, with further silver detailing to the front and four rounded silver feet beneath. One detail that stands out is the way the silver ornament follows the undulating outline of the box, giving the decoration a sense of movement rather than simply sitting on the surface. The contrast between the dark tortoise shell and bright silver gives the piece much of its character.
The interior forms a single open compartment for jewellery and other small personal items, making this an attractive and practical piece for a dressing table or display cabinet.
