An elaborate antique continental silver tray centred by what could be described as a coaching-yard scene, with travellers or locals gathered around a table or counter, a horse standing to one side and a dog in the foreground. Architectural details and trees complete the setting, giving the central panel the character of a small narrative scene.
The broad shaped border is particularly striking, combining pierced latticework with scrolling foliate ornament, flowers, beaded detailing and prominent mask motifs to either side. We particularly like the way the open pierced sections lighten the richness of the border and frame the central scene without overpowering it.
With its sculptural relief, intricate piercing and strongly decorative outline, this is a highly engaging display piece for a sideboard, dining table or cabinet – circa 1900.
