A Victorian sterling silver pepper pot, hallmarked Sheffield 1894. The shaped body is raised on a circular pedestal foot and finished with a decorative ribbed band around the lower section, while the removable domed cover is extensively pierced and topped by a small finial.
The front is engraved beneath a crown with a Stafford knot motif and the inscription “4TH BAT SS REGT”. This is understood to refer to the 4th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, with “4TH BAT” denoting 4th Battalion and “SS REGT” standing for South Staffordshire Regiment. The regimental association is particularly appropriate to the Stafford knot incorporated into the engraved device.
The combination of Victorian sterling silver, decorative piercing and distinctive military engraving gives the piece considerable visual interest, making it appealing both as table silver and as a piece of regimental memorabilia.
Measurements:
Height: 3 1/2" (approx. 9cm)
Silver weight: 39g
In good condition – The pepper pot has a couple of small dents and light surface marks, as though it may once have enjoyed a particularly lively evening in the officers’ mess. Nothing too alarming, though, and it remains a very presentable piece with plenty of character.
