A Really Fabulous Large Grand Tour Brass Inkwell with a strongly architectural pedestal shape with richly worked Renaissance and classical-inspired ornament. Each side is decorated with pierced scrolling foliage, flowers and classical female mask motifs.
The stepped square base is enriched with engraved borders, scrollwork and projecting decorative feet. The hinged lid is surmounted by a finely modelled eagle with outstretched wings, giving the piece a particularly sculptural profile. The hinged lid opens to reveal a removable cylindrical inkwell liner set within the central aperture – circa 1880.
