A Really Stunning Antique Victorian Claret Jug that combines a tall etched glass body with an elaborate silver-plated mount, hinged lid and handle. Its cylindrical glass body is beautifully engraved with a large arrangement of flowers, foliage and fern-like leaves.
The silver-plated upper mount is richly modelled with figures, scrollwork and applied relief decoration. A broad figural frieze encircles the neck and depicts a lively classical or Bacchanalian scene. The spout is supported by a sculptural mask terminal that adds considerable character to the design – circa 1880.
* The richly modelled figural frieze transforms this serving jug into a striking piece of sculptural tableware!
Measurements:
Height: 11" (approx. 28cm)
Diameter of base: 5" (approx. 12.5cm)
Total weight: 1586g
In good condition – The silver plate shows only light surface wear consistent with age and careful handling. There is some attractive, age-related wear to the silver plating on the figural frieze, revealing small areas of the warm copper beneath.
