A Rare and Unusual Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver combination case, incorporating an upper cigarette compartment and a lower matchbox holder. The piece has a tall rectangular form with softly rounded edges and a lightly hammered exterior. A plain oval cartouche is set into the front.
The hinged upper lid opens to reveal a gilt interior intended for storing cigarettes. The lower section is formed as an open-ended sleeve designed to hold a removable matchbox. A side aperture allows access to the matchbox striking surface while the box remains fitted inside the silver holder. Hallmarked for Chester, 1908.
