A Handsome Antique Silver Framed Magnifying Glass with a shagreen covered handle. Shagreen is a type of rawhide leather traditionally made from the skins of certain fish most commonly stingrays or sharks. It has a distinctive textured surface that is often covered with small round granules or a pebbled pattern giving it a unique and luxurious appearance. Historically shagreen was highly prized in Asia and Europe especially during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was often used to cover luxury items such as jewellery boxes book covers and other high-end personal accessories. Hallmarked EAJ for maker Ernest Arthur Jacob - London 1924.
