A Really Fabulous Antique Victorian Silver Plated Claret Jug. The glass body is trumpet-shaped with a broad foot, finished with a cut starburst to the base for added sparkle. The silver plated collar is edged with a repeating scallop-style border that frames the piece neatly.
A sculptural lion finial stands on the lid, holding a small shield that gives the top a heraldic, ceremonial feel. A cast mask-style detail sits beneath the spout, adding a strong period flourish to the mount. A heraldic crest and motto are engraved to the collar, reading the Latin phrase “Virtus vincit invidiam” which translates to “Virtue conquers envy.” Circa 1880.
* This style of mounted glass jug suits wine, water, or cordial service and displays well on a sideboard or drinks tray.
