Antique Betel Nut Box in the Islamic design with brass with silver inlay. The box has three separate containers with flip up lids. Antique betel nut boxes also known as chewing boxes or betel boxes are traditional containers used to store and carry the ingredients needed for preparing and consuming betel quid (also called paan). Betel quid is a chewable mixture made from betel leaf areca nut (often called betel nut) slaked lime and sometimes tobacco or other flavourings. This practice is common in many parts of Asia including India Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
